Our story
TREEZ was born out of a selfless need to maintain the ‘FOREST’ part of Zomba Forest Lodge and it soon became an all encompassing obsession. Living in Malawi, in a rural community, on the edge of a medium sized city, the effects of deforestation are inescapable. The rates of deforestation and environmental degradation were (and still are) alarming, but they also realised that they have the luxury of being able to observe this, whereas the communities around them don’t have the luxury of being able to afford gas, or even buy firewood, most of them have no income and yet must still find a way to feed their families. And so they embarked on a environmental mission in order to help protect and preserve heir surrounding area while helping to spread environmental awareness and provide extra income where they can.
Much of their work is carried out through trial and error, because their western ideas do not necessarily translate as good/practical/feasible/deliverable ideas on the ground. And in order to be as effective as possible, they carry out a variety of activities, all aiming to reduce the burden on the forests and improve livelihoods in the communities.
