About Us

Welcome! My name is Filly, and I'm so grateful you are taking the time to check out who we are. Kaza Kitchen is the continuous fulfilment of a dream, and combines my passion for people, food and positive social transformation.

Kaza is my vision but it's definitely only possible through the effort and skills of each person in our team, and through the belief and support from our customers.

Kaza is built and succeeds through Community

My guiding belief is that through intentional decision making,

an industry can be more than just a business for business sake,

and people can do more than just eat for eating sake.

Businesses can promote worthy causes by adopting and implementing specific value systems.

People can appreciate where their food comes from, what went into getting it onto their plates, and what effects their consumption has on other individuals and our earth.

I believe that attitudes and aspirations which are followed by actions, no matter how small, make a difference

Our Story

Our Timeline

2015: Kaza Kitchen is officially registered as a business.  We have a stall at the monthly farmers' market selling wraps, sushi, hummus, dips, fresh juices, and sugared nuts. We start outsourced catering for small domestic private jobs.

2016: Continue monthly farmers' market and expand the range of products we sell. Continue small ad hoc small catering jobs & start building the Kaza venue

2017: Start supplying Gluten Free products to other restaurants and begin catering jobs for embassies (200+ ppl)  as well as catering for lakeside weddings (200+ ppl). Continue with monthly farmers' markets and ad hoc small catering jobs. Continue building the Kaza venue Building Complete.  Recruit Staff + 4 months of staff training and décor set up.  19 June Kaza doors open for the first time (only deli and kitchen building – no outside covered area).  Provide more diplomatic outsources catering (400+ ppl).  At the end of the year, we start to build our sheltered outdoor seating area

2018: Early January sheltered area complete. Café & Deli in full swing. We don’t have a menu: it’s more ‘canteen’ style: customers come inside and get one ‘hot meal’ of the day (veg and meat options available) or help themselves to anything from the deli – hummus, sushi

2019: The virus that turned the world upside down hits Malawi End of March.  Business goes quiet but we stay open and adjust our model.  We develop an app with our menu, offer grocery fruit and veg shopping, and hot meal deliveries. As restrictions and fears ‘ease’ a little, we open up an outside seating area with new menus and waiter service. Our gardener attends 3-week permaculture training at Mushroom Farm to learn to apply principles in our garden.

2020: Build community recycling depo and greenhouse, out of recycled bottles and eco-bricks. Full implementation of permaculture in our gardens.  Performing artists begin busking once a week to help give them a platform to make an income and expose their talent. Monthly art exhibits with different artists to showcase their art.

2021: Expanded new menu. Deli interior gets a ‘new look’. Collect and write content for profiles of suppliers and projects we support.

2022: Build Kaza website

OUR NAME: What does it Mean?

KAZA is our jazzed-up spelling for the word CASA – which is the Portuguese word for HOME.

So literally translated it means HOME KITCHEN. Why? Because we make homey food: comfort food… and we want you to feel at home.  There are no frills and drama or pretense to what we do. Our chefs have not been to cooking schools: they all learned from working in their own homes, other people’s homes or they started at Kaza. Filly, founder of Kaza, was also inspired to cook by watching her mum and Portuguese grandmother – humble culinary wonder women. Incorporating her Portuguese heritage through the name is also a way to celebrate and remember her grandmother and her roots. So welcome to our home.  Mi casa es su casa. Our Home is Your Home.
