Gift' story

Ever wondered where the tasty halloumi cheese is from? Micholess creamery produces a wide range of soft cheeses, including halloumi and feta cheese. Having the aim of transforming smallholder farmers livelihoods, Gift Mchonjo decided to start the cheese production business in 2017, an untapped industry in Malawi. He could not stand the fact that most cheese was imported, which prompted him to start producing it domestically at a quality that is on par with imported cheese. The company is willing to produce cheese that can be used for various purposes- to bake pizzas, haroumis, or even to consume directly. The products to produce their cheese, milk for instance, come largely from domestic suppliers.

Always inclined to have a positive social impact, he has already taught the art of making cheese to more than 60 students for free, one of them is already working in this sector. He believes that hiring locals for the production and selling the cheese within the country is the first step to positively influence the domestic economy. On top of this, Gift has a goal of exporting his cheese, which will contribute to expand his business as well as further contributing to the Malawian economy.

Limited resources have always been a challenge for Micholess cremery. The current factory and storage have a limited capacity that does not allow a mass production. The business also faces a fierce competition when purchasing milk. Gift believes one solution to this problem would be to actually buy cattle that produce milk and loan them to some farmers who produce milk, where some of the milk production can be supplied back to Micholess cremery. His plan does not stop here- whenever the cattle gives its first birth, he believes this newborn cattle should be given to another farmer, in order for the entire farmer community to flourish.
