Fannie's story

Ever wondered what Kaza's cakes, pies, and pizza bases are made from? Perisha Agro offers a unique and nutritious range of flour products, including cassava, orange fleshed sweet potato (OFSP), orange maize flour and OFSP puree.

They aim at 'improving the nutrition status of women and children by promoting the growth of nutritious locally grown food crops' which is derived from two distinct reasons- one happy and another tragic. Fannie Perisha Gondwe grew up with her father who motivated her to love farming and take it up as a business and  with the idea of farming business in her mind, Fannie experienced the loss of her sister's 2-year old baby in the north of Malawi due to malnutrition. This prompted Fannie to start advocating and promoting the growing and consumption of locally grown nutritious foods to help the government and people of Malawi in any small way, to save innocent souls from malnutrition. Fannie has completed a MBA from East and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI), and founded Perisha Agro in 2012, operating since 2015.

Replacing usual maize flour with her products to make nsima, a beloved Malawian soul food, could bring various health benefits. The easiness of replacing flour to make an everyday meal is what Perisha Agro strives to achieve, and is happily succeeding at it. All the flours are fortified with various nutrients: the orange maize is rich in Vitamin A, and her newly produced bean flour is fortified with Zinc.

Fannie is committed to achieving 5 goals through her products: Nutritious, high-quality products, consistent supply, reasonable pricing, and food security. To make this happen, Perisha Agro hires 14 full-time employees, and almost 300 seasonal workers, which are all Malawians. The positive social impact the business has made is extremely impressive.

Perisha Agro has successfully obtained MBS pre-certified status and is currently working to get the full certification soon. The business is now in the phase of commercial expansion, and Fannie hopes that she can engage more in work related to marketing strategy and promotion. Simultaneously, she wishes that her products can reach lands outside Malawi- for foreign customers to benefit from her products.
